Wonder
As hard as you think it might be, it will be harder.

That may sound a bit discouraging, but we want you to succeed, and what you don't
know will hurt you.

Do what you love.
Starting a new business takes passion and commitment.
If it is not something that you truly love doing or feel very good about doing it may not be
the right thing.

Get and stay informed.
That takes time.  Do not under any circumstances short cut this part of the process.
You will be wearing multiple hats and you ill have to stay on top of all the details and
processes,
even the  things that really don't interest you.

Plan and budget for the help you will need.
Payroll, paperwork, taxes.....
These things can take up much of your time and distract you from effectively running
your business.  Hire out what ever you can,
as soon as you can.

Do not blindly trust your book keeper.
It doesn't matter if it is your sister or your best friend.
A quarterly or bi-annual audit is not very expensive and
can help you avoid costly mistakes that even the best book keeper can make.

Learn time management.  This is essential.
Read the 7 Habits, it will help a lot.

Write and rewrite your mission statement
and business plan until it is darn close to perfect.
Having a clear written plan will help you define and stay focused on your specific goals
and direction.  It will also help you articulate about your business, which you will have to
do, and you will have to do it well.
Often on the first try.

Budget, and budget realistically.
Pad your budget well for unforeseen events.
If you are just starting out with your own two hands
be prepared to work  hard.

Show no fear.
People have to know that you are serious and take you seriously
if your business is to succeed.  If you are not comfortable being strong work on
developing that confidence before you begin.

Demand Respect.
Do this by carrying yourself, speaking and dressing in a professional manner.
Sometimes you will have to deal with crotchety or condescending people.  Do not
indulge them by playing along or trying to cajole them.  Put on your poker face and let
them know you are not one to deal with bullshit.

Be comfortable with people thinking you are a bitch.
This business will be your baby and you will not have time for much frivolous interaction.
Your true friends will support you and understand your time limitations and enjoy you
when they can.  Others will think you are a bitch.  Get used to it.
Your business and eventually your employees well being is dependent on how  well you
manage this business.  You don't have time for time wasters or people who distract you
with drama.
TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU MUST KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE!

Be committed and stay committed.
The people who are willing to get up and get the job done and even when its the last
thing they feel like doing, are the ones
who succeed.

Surround yourself with positive, supportive people.
You already know what a difference that makes.

Be flexible.
New information and circumstances come up every day.  Be ready and willing to alter
your course a bit without losing sight
of your bigger goals.

Keep your eyes open for new possibilities and better,
smarter ways to do things.

Be patient with yourself and others.
You will make mistakes and so will they.
~ Work with them to find the best possible solution you can now.
Draw firm lines in your own mind of how far you are willing to bend to just resolve the
situation and move forward.  If they refuse to be accept accountability for their mistakes
you may not be able to continue working with them.

Be Honest in all your dealings
and treat others as you wish to be treated.

Expect the same, and never knowingly work with dishonest people.
It always comes back to bite you.  Always.  If they will do it to someone else rest
assured that your turn will come around and they will do it to you.  It's just a matter of
when....

Don't expect your employees to be perfect.
Try to match them initially, or reassign them to the job that they will be best at.  Even if
you have to redirect them always treat them in a respectful manner.  That will build
loyalty and a happier and more productive work atmosphere.

Do make your expectations very clear in writing
Do this for your employees from the get go.  That way you can be very sure you have
communicated clearly.  This provides opportunity for them to ask better questions, and
helps you both identify any gaps or strengths between your expectations and their
skills.  Good communications can make all the difference in saving you time and money
by retaining great employees and better screening those who just aren't a good fit for
your needs at this time.

Do record every verbal and written reprimand for everything.
Drawing the line immediately lets everyone know where you stand and what lines not to
cross.  This record will also help you justify letting someone go if they simply refuse to
work well or responsibly within your organization.

Don't gossip and discourage employee gossip.

It breeds trouble.

Stay excited about what you are doing.
It motivates and brings out the best in the people around you.

Some of this advice may sound contradictory or discouraging but it is not meant to be.
These are all thing you need to know.  Trust us, many of us learned the hard way and
we don;t want you to have to do the same.

Everyone
who is
successful

must have
dreamed of
something.
I learned this, at least,
by my experiment:

that if one advances
confidently in the
direction of his dreams,

and endeavors to live
the life which he has
imagined,

he will meet with a
success unexpected in
common hours.

Henry Thoreau
